From Captain Jeffrey Riddle of Middletown Fire Protection District:
With the extremely dry conditions this fall please pay extra attention to the following.
Cigarettes: We have noticed an increase run volume involving cigarettes do to the dry conditions. Be sure to dispose of cigarettes, cigars, and matches by putting them into approved containers or by running water over them. Discarding them in the grass, landscaping, or flower pots is very dangerous do to the extremely dry conditions.
Charcoal: Charcoal can stay hot enough to ignite fires for days. Be sure to dispose of charcoal in some type of metal container or use water to cool before dumping in the yard or gardens. Never put Charcoal in your plastic garbage containers.
Fire Pit/Fire Place Ash: Use some type of metal container or metal garbage to empty your Fireplaces or Fire Pits. Like Charcoal, ash will hold heat for several days and should never be put into a plastic garbage container.
Thanksgiving Turkeys: if you like to deep fry you’re Turkey, remember to make sure it is completely thawed and also keep the fryer at least 10 feet away from the house or deck.
